Child Therapy

I offer in-person therapy with children as young as 4-years. Not all children are developmentally appropriate for therapy, so service is always provided at the therapist’s discretion.

Children playing, laughing and blowing bubbles

Where’s that sweet child with the silly grin and joyful laughter typically associated with a happy childhood?

That’s where I come in.

My extensive training and decades of experience have prepared me to help you and your beloved son or daughter bring more joy and satisfaction into your lives and your relationship.

CHILD THERAPY IS ABOUT HELPING YOU HELP YOUR CHILD.

I conduct therapy with children as young as 4-years-old. Taking into consideration that not all children are developmentally appropriate for therapy, service is always provided at the discretion of the therapist. I only provide in-person therapy with children; no telehealth services for children.

Successful behavioral change in children depends on the establishment of expectations and encouragement at home to facilitates the skills and habits started in therapy.

Young children aren’t capable of the attention and focus needed to apply therapy work beyond the moment – beyond the confines of the therapy session. Consequently, creating effective, lasting change entails therapy not with just the child, but also with the parents.

Parent engagement is fundamental to success.

I typically require a parent or an adult caregiver who resides with the child to attend the sessions with younger ages or developmental stages.

In these sessions we’ll use strategies such as: interactive play therapy, stories, games, enactments, and other child-friendly activities combined with parent training and support to teach you and your child skills to effectively manage their emotions and behavior.

It is also common to have an occasional session without the child present to answer parents’ questions and teach parenting skills. These sessions will include coaching on how to tailor parenting strategies to best meet the specific needs of your child and family.

I’ll equip you to create the secure boundaries and trusting relationship needed for you to get and keep your child on a desirable path. I’ll also facilitate positive communication between you and your child that builds a lasting bond of love and respect.

As therapy progresses, less direct parental engagement will be needed.

As children mature, they gradually outgrow needing a parent’s participation in every aspect of therapy. As your child becomes able to learn better, remember better, and is able to apply therapy concepts to daily situations on their own, parental attendance in every session will no longer be needed.

Typically, once a child can engage and participate in activities of therapy and express their thoughts and feelings effectively, parental participation becomes more of a check-in opportunity- perhaps 5 minutes of session time for the parent to affirm child’s accomplishments, express concerns, or share anything significant that has occurred since the last session.

I welcome the opportunity to work with you and your child!

It will be a privilege to assist you and your child to achieve a new normal, a reality where the ups and downs of life are manageable, and where the joy of your child’s curiosity and enthusiasm for life give you fulfillment and satisfaction as you watch him or her grown into a thriving adolescent and eventually become an adult you’re pleased to be a parent to.
